End mill FAQ

Which end mill should I use for aluminum?

The DLC-coated 3 flute end mills (LS-CT-13xx). They're rated Good for aluminum and other non-ferrous metals, and the coating keeps aluminum from welding to the cutting edge. The uncoated 3 flute set (LS-CT-03xx) is rated OK and costs less.

What's the difference between uncoated, DLC and AlTiN?

Uncoated carbide has polished flutes for non-ferrous metals and plastics. DLC (diamond-like carbon) is a slick coating that resists built-up edge in aluminum. AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride) handles heat, so it's the coating for steel, stainless, cast iron and hard alloys. Don't use AlTiN in aluminum.

What do P, M, K, N, S and H mean?

They're the ISO material groups: P steel, M stainless steel, K cast iron, N aluminum and other non-ferrous metals, S titanium and high-temperature alloys, H hardened steel. Pick a group at the top of the configurator to see only the tools rated Good or OK for it.

When should I use a variable-index finishing end mill?

Variable-index tools (the 5 and 7 flute LS-CT-25xx and 27xx) space their flutes unevenly, which breaks up vibration and reduces chatter. Use them for finishing in stainless, titanium and hardened steel. The equal-index 6 flute tools are a good general finisher for steel.

How does the build-your-own set discount work?

Add end mills to your set in the configurator. The discount is applied automatically at checkout: 5% off at 5 tools, 10% off at 10 and 15% off at 20. Every end mill in your cart counts, including ones you added earlier. Kits are already discounted and don't count toward the tiers.
